Amethyst Facts
The Amethyst, the true birthstone for February, has been around for many thousands of years. It is truly the most striking representative of the quartz family and has been a jewel coveted by princes, both ecclesiastical and secular.
Moses used it in the official robes of the High Priest of the Jews, and the Russiand describe it as the most beautiful of all crystal quartzes.
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and the most valued member of the quartz family. It must be purple to be amethyst, however, it comes in several shades; including deep purple, light lilac, lavender and mauve.
Top quality amethyst is a deep medium purple with rose-colored flashes. Its purple color made it a stone of royalty for many thousands of years.
Some amethysts pale in daylight. No one knows why for sure, but sense these stones can lose their color if exposed to sunlight, one should be careful not to wear amethyst jewelry while sunbathing or partaking in other sun filled activities. Sudden changes in temperature can also be harmful to the stone.
Amethyst is found inside geodes and in alluvial deposits all around the world. When manganese is present in clear quartz, amethyst is produced, while the amount of iron contained in the specimen is responsible for the depth of purple.
