Ruby facts
Rubies are known as the King of gemstones. They come from the red variety of the corundum family. Pure corundum, like beryls, is colorless. Chrome is the element which gives the ruby its wonderful color. Rubies, as with Sapphires, are second only to the diamond, in hardness.
Unfortunately, this beautiful "ruby red" gemstone is very rare. As a result, rubies of more than 3 carats in size are very hard to come by. It is no wonder fine quality rubies can cost a small fortune.
The color is the most important feature of the ruby and a perfect cut is essential. For centuries there were differences of opinion among the specialists as to which stones should be called rubies and which should be called sapphire. Finally, it was agreed that the ruby-red "sapphires", should be called "rubies" and all those which were not ruby-red would be called "sapphires".
