Peridot Facts
 
The genuine Birthstone for August is the vivid green peridot. This lovely green stone has just a touch of gold color in it. The peridot is a very old gemstone, one which has become very popular again today. It is so ancient that it can be found in Egyptian jewelry from as early as 2000 B.C.
 
The original peridot stones came from a deposit on a small volcanic island in the Red Sea, some 45 miles off the Egyptian coast. This island was rediscovered around the 1900's and, unfortunately, has been exhausted of its peridot treasure.

The peridot is one of the few gemstones that comes in only one color. A rich, green color, with a tinge of gold. The goldfish color is caused by very fine traces of iron within the stone. Peridot is an iron magnesium silicate. The intensity of the color depends on the amount of iron present. The color itself can vary from yellowish green and olive, to a brownish green. Peridot is not a very hard stone, but it is easy to care for.
